OUTDOOR LIVING

Dan and Katie
Piacquadio,
both hard-
working San Diego-area
physicians, wander down
from their house to their
comfortably furnished
redwood pergola and let the
day’s tensions drift away in
the balmy breeze.
The structure and the
patio beneath are the answer
to the couple’s need for more
living space. They hired
landscape designer Melanie
Mackenzie to design the
pergola. Then Katie deco-
rated the alfresco family room
with sturdy pieces that
visually link with the gardens
surrounding the pergola. “I
wanted it to be inviting, not
fancy or fussy,” says Katie.
“I just love this special
little area. We’re so fortunate
to have a beautiful spot where
we can enjoy the outdoors.”
